\nDoiwala (chaman lal)Himalayan Hospital, Jolly Grant, has achieved a major milestone by successfully performing a highly challenging kidney transplant. What makes this transplant even more remarkable is that both the recipient and the donor had previously battled serious health conditions.
\nBhagwan Das (48 years) had been on hemodialysis for the past eight years due to kidney failure. Hemodialysis was particularly complex for both the patient and Nephrologist Dr. Shahbaz Ahmad, as Bhagwan Das had no permanent dialysis fistula and was undergoing dialysis through a catheter. Dialysis via catheter carries a high risk of infections.
\nIn 2022, despite regular dialysis and medication, his hemoglobin levels began to drop consistently. Further investigations revealed that he was suffering from Multiple Myeloma, a type of cancer that affects the kidneys and bone marrow. The standard treatment for Multiple Myeloma is Bone Marrow Transplantation, a procedure with high infection risk, requiring patients to be kept in isolation. Simultaneously, regular dialysis was essential for him.
\nWith the combined efforts of Dr. Shahbaz Ahmad and Dr. Kunal Das, Bhagwan Das successfully underwent a bone marrow transplant that year. Following his recovery, his wife volunteered to donate her kidney. Notably, she had earlier successfully battled thyroid cancer.<\/p>\n

*Challenging Medical Evaluation Before Transplant*<\/p>\n

The pre-transplant medical evaluation was extremely challenging. Since the recipient had undergone treatment for Multiple Myeloma and the donor had recovered from thyroid cancer, careful assessment was crucial.
\nThe key concern was that if Multiple Myeloma was not fully under control, it could affect the newly transplanted kidney and cause further damage.
\nSenior Nephrologists Dr. Shahbaz Ahmad and Dr. Avritti Baveja, after detailed investigations, confirmed that the disease was under control, and kidney transplantation could proceed. Additionally, the donor was cleared by the oncology surgeon.
\nSubsequently, the skilled team comprising Urologists Dr. Rajiv Sarpal, Dr. Shikhar Agarwal, Dr. Pankaj, Dr. Suvit Jumde, Anesthetists Dr. Veena Asthana, Dr. Abhimanyu, Nephrologists Dr. Shahbaz Ahmad, Dr. Vikas Chandel, and Dr. Brajesh Maurya successfully performed the kidney transplant, achieving a remarkable feat.
